No one is going to deny the sheer intensity of the Souls games taken as a whole. Topping the games in the franchise that have been released thus far wasn’t going to be easy, but it doesn’t seem like Bloodborne director Hidetaka Miyazaki was particularly worried about it.
At any rate, there is a strong case to be made that at this juncture, Bloodborne is the best PlayStation 4 game to be released so far.
A Look At Bloodborne
If you know what kind of games Miyazaki tends to make, then you already know what you should expect from Bloodborne. Expect a game that is seemingly designed to do nothing more than frustrate and captivate you in equal measures. If you don’t know what to expect from Bloodborne, then at least keep this fact in mind: This game is absolutely brutal.
It would be too simplistic to categorize Bloodborne and the other games in the Souls series as action RPGs. They do indeed qualify for that very crowded genre, but you’re going to find that like a particularly challenging film or any other piece of art, Bloodborne frequently defies the simplest explanation you can give it. You may feel a little at home in the sword-and-sorcery elements that define the game, and you’re probably going to be knocked over by just how magnificent and ingenious the designs and mechanics are for some of the creatures that make up this release. At the same time, you’re probably going to find yourself screaming at the heavens, as you try to adjust to one of the most vicious learning curves for a game in recent memory.
What you have to understand with Bloodborne is that this is a game that is going to establish just how hardcore of a gamer you really are. The rewards for making it through this game are numerous, in terms of story and other immersive gaming experience essentials, but getting to those rewards? It will take patience. For some people, there is simply not enough patience in their universe to handle the fact that Bloodborne features some of the most challenging combat of the entire franchise. This combat is made even more difficult by the fact that the speed has been heightened, while defensive measures have been substantially scaled back.
This is just one of the ways in which Bloodborne is going to keep you up. The stunning visuals and sounds make up another reason. Get ready to get hooked.
